Student volunteers plant hundreds of trees in Snowdonia

Students from Âé¶čAV have planted hundreds of trees as part of an exciting wildlife project with a tourism business in Snowdonia.
The group, from the Bangor Forestry Studentsâ Association (BFSA), hope the new trees will improve the landscape of the world-famous Ogwen Valley, near Bethesda.
Organised by Neil Martinson, from the Snowdonia Mountain Hostel, over 400 native tree species were planted by the Âé¶čAV volunteers.
Explaining the importance of the work, Mr Martinson said: âWe sourced the trees from the Woodland Trust as they are special âpioneer speciesâ which encourage other trees to grow.
âThere are loads of advantages to having more trees in this valley so, with the help of Âé¶čAV, we really hope weâve kick-started this process.â
âWe planted goat willow, holly, crab apple, hazel and birch; all indigenous species designed to withstand the brutal wind and rain we often experience here in Snowdonia â and which the students coped with wonderfully during the tree planting!â Mr Martinson added.
Tree planting in the Ogwen ValleyDr James Walmsley, course director for forestry degrees at Âé¶čAV said: âOur students learn about all about the planting of trees and forests; so itâs fantastic they get the opportunity to put this knowledge into practise.
âItâs also great that forestry students are able to volunteer and put something back into the local community which will benefit future generations.â
Forestry student and vice-president of BFSA, Chris Andrews, praised the Snowdonia Mountain Hostel and the universityâs lecturers for helping organise the event.
âWeâre so lucky to be studying in such a fantastic location where we get to go out and be involved in reforestation projects like this.
âAnd of course the home-made lasagne at the hostel went down exceptionally well after a hard day of tree planting!â Mr Andrews added.
